Facts, Fun and Awards

22. Dec 2017

What a weekend! Much thirst for knowledge and much fun of running at the Running Symposium of the Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (German Track and Field Association; DLV) which took place in a winter wonderland in Siegen, and at the gala evening for the Runner of the Year Awards 2017.

The second edition of the symposium took place on December 2 and 3. The association realized last year: There is a need for such an event. So they put together an agenda, which again covered current topics as social media, trends in the sport of running, prevention and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP). The topic with the most complicated name certainly was the GDRP. But it is a good thing that you are tripping over it. Because it is very important. There is not much time left for companies in Germany to get ready. It becomes effective in May. That is the deadline for every business that handles personal data for proving that it follows the rules and regulations of the GDPR. Rose Müller, data security expert and data protection officer at mika:timing, pointed out that there will be high fines for every company that is not compliant with the GDPR. As a service for event organizers, mika:timing is offering a workshop about the GDPR. It takes place on April 7 in Berlin. Initial information is available on a special website. There will be additional details in January.

Saturday afternoon there was a longer break from the symposium, notebooks were put away and running shoes were taken out. At least that was true for the participants who went on a run through the hilly woods of the Siegerland, accompanied by Arne Gabius and Joey Kelly. The rest of the group enjoyed a tour of the Krombacher brewery. There was beer for everyone after tour and run were finished, as a warm-up for the gala evening. Musician and endurance athlete Joey Kelly was one the main speakers that night, he impressed and inspired the 300 invited guests.

The Runners of the Year 2017:
Gesa Felicitas Krause, Arne Gabius.
Amateur Runner of the Year 2017:
Klaus Noffz from Leverkusen, whose mission is to help fellow runners to finish a race.
Junior Cup Winner 2017 (the German Junior Runners Cup was held for the first time in 2017; it is a series of 10k street runs):
Amanal Petros (SV Brackwede), Franziska Reng, Regensburg.

Users of laufen.de voted for the pro and amateur runners. An initial selection was done by a jury. Members of the jury were among others Joey Kelly, the former sports reporter for the second public broadcasting station in Germany (ZDF) Wolf-Dieter Poschmann, Editor in chief of laufen.de Christian Ermert, Vice President of DLV Dr. Matthias Reick, Head of DLV Marketing Frank Lebert and Head of PR for Krombacher Brewery Dr. Franz-Josef Weihrauch.

The „starter pack“ for the events of the weekend were available at the LIVE printing counters that mika:timing had installed. A lot of runners were familiar with the live printing of their bib numbers which is also offered at running events. And it worked smoothly as usual also for the symposium in Siegen and for the gala evening in Kreuztal. All the guests needed to do was stating their name or showing the QR code of their registration on their mobile phone. They received their documents freshly printed on site including name tag and coupon for the run or the tour.

A video with impressions from gala and symposium is available here.
